PHSSA GOES TO THE VMFA// & valentines day in room 105
February was a fun fun month of field trips, new units, & LOTS OF SNOW!!! To intro our ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS unit we went to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This beautiful museum is located right in our city and offers amazing (and lots of times FREE!) opportunities for our children's brains to explore beautiful art throughout our world. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures from our visit. We did an amazing job, asked great questions, and really showcased what it is like to be from PHSSA.
This year for Valentine's day we did something really special! I found this book from a neighbor--and I have to say it-- love & monsters, some of my favorite things! We read the book and did a type of "Children's Engineering" project. The students needed to create a "LOVE MONSTER" using only specific things. They COULD NOT use any writing utensils, which at first, they all though their teacher was craaaazy! Love all of these little monsters with all my heart! Thanks for sharing your special children with me each & every day.

FAMOUS AMERICAN DAY!
I just HAVE to say--- this is one of my all time favorite days of the year. Not saying that EVERY DAY with these sweet faces are not my favorite.... but Famous American Day is just the best. Watching, seeing, experiencing all the hard work these beautiful second grade faces have done is just so amazing. Here are some of the faces of Patrick Henry's travel through time.
Enjoy--- I know I did!

During our MAGNET investigation Miss Martin's class mixed in and we created a class magnet book. Each group had a magnet vocabulary word, they explored it, wrote the page, illustrated it, and shared it using our speaking voices. Our audience also did an amazing job being kind, respectful, supportive friends. What a fun time it was to all be together, sharing our brains, and creating a new book for our class libraries! Some of the pages include--Attract, Repel, Magnetism, Magnetic Field, Artificial Magnet, Natural Magnet, Compass. We love our little scientists.

During our Famous American unit we read, write, research, and create. Friday our famous American of the day was Martin Luther King Jr. We read a biography and one of my favorites My Brother Martin (listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttSQYuRxBBY), listened to his famous speech, and created our own dreams. I was so impressed by the student's facial illustrations. Our Famous American board will be on the blog as soon as we finish :) Make sure to check it out in the 2nd grade hall.
